CIO Brief: Your Vendors' Cloud Buckets Are Your Data Exposure
Retrospective: this article looks back at events from June 2017, written in 2026 with the benefit of hindsight.
The short version: In 2017, a data company working for the Republican National Committee left personal details on 198 million voters in an unprotected cloud storage folder. A researcher found it. The organization that owned the relationship took the reputational hit.
Why vendor data exposure is your exposure
Your customer and employee data increasingly lives with vendors: marketing agencies, analytics firms, payroll providers, software platforms. When they misconfigure their cloud storage, your name is in the headline and your regulators come calling.
The business impact
- Regulatory exposure: privacy laws hold data owners responsible for their processors.
- Customer trust: customers don't distinguish between you and your vendor.
- Contract leverage lost: without security terms, you have little recourse.
Questions to ask your team
- Which vendors hold our sensitive customer or employee data, and where do they store it?
- Do our contracts require specific security controls, breach notification and audit rights?
- Do we share only the data a vendor actually needs?
- How do we get our data back or deleted when a contract ends?
What good looks like
A vendor inventory ranked by data sensitivity, security requirements written into contracts, annual reviews for the highest-risk vendors, and data minimization — sharing less so there is less to lose.
The decision
Ask procurement and IT to identify your top ten vendors by data sensitivity this quarter and confirm each has security and breach-notification terms. It is unglamorous work that prevents very visible headlines.
